SANBA: the extension of your living room
There is a new place to be in the Antwerp neighbourhood ’t Eilandje: SANBA. A new breakfast and lunch spot, bar, co-working space and event location.
SANBA is located in the historic luggage warehouse of the famed Red Star Line. The interior is designed by the Belgian designer duo PJMARES. Although the interior has an industrial feel to it, it is an open space with pops of colour, Scandinavian inspired furniture and carefully curated plants. The eye catchers are the floating bar, and the elevated podium from where you can see the river Scheldt. The place is very relaxed and you immediately feel at home. Another striking feature is the graphic design of the menu and the logo, done by our very own Antwerpian Stephanie Specht.
I had a chat with the owners Geoff Coulon and Kim Huyskens, who are also the duo behind Bar LEFT: “We want to be the ‘place next door’, where you can go and have your daily coffee, have your set place to work, or have a cocktail with friends at the end of the day.” In short, they want to be the extension of your own living room.
The food is exquisite and you get good value for your money. The daily menu changes often and has a focus on local and seasonal products. The food is simple but fresh and pact with taste. Expect a menu of basics like home-made granola with yoghurt to unique salads with a twist. I for example had a tuna salad with asparagus.
Besides their own coffee roast, Sanba offers a wide variety of Antwerp brewed beers and cocktails. It is one of the only places on ‘t Eilandje where you can go for a quick lunch that is set in a beautiful space with a focus on design and details.
Great eateries on ‘t Eilandje come and go, but if you ask me, this one is here to stay.
